In describing how Clay Song Studio began, Karen Phillips explains, “I was collecting ceramic works long before I realized I could actually make them. I came to clay after I retired, and have been doing hand-building and throwing for about six years. About three years ago, I realized that my real passion is carving leather-hard clay. Since I feel my own thrown work is too mediocre to invest all that carving time and patience, I’ve been collaborating with Marilyn Cleavinger for a couple of years as ClaySong Studio. She throws exquisite forms, and the combination of her forms, my carving, and her glazing produce works we like.”
